Recognizing Excellence in Radiation Therapy: Bree Heinz

November 9, 2020

In recognition of #NRTW20, today we are highlighting Bree Heinz.

Bree has been a radiation therapist for 21 years. She currently works at King Daughters Health and loves working at a small center due to the many benefits, including spending time with her patients. Cancer care is personal, and there are few bonds between patients and the medical staff more important than that of a radiation therapist. This trust in treatment is necessary, which is a motivating factor to Bree.

"I get to share my life with the patients and learn all about their grandkids and their families. They are showing you pictures, and it's just wonderful to build that relationship with them."

The job is rewarding for Bree as well. Every day, she gets to come to work and make a difference in people’s lives. This commitment to her patients is unwavering and something we can all learn from.

"Challenges don't come to mind when I talk about my occupation. Like I tell everybody, if I had to do it all over again, I would do the same thing. I absolutely love my job. I never dread coming to work. It's just an enjoyable atmosphere."

The theme of National RadTech Week is “Building on our history, creating a future.” With that in mind, what are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in your career?

“The biggest change is the technology. It’s continually changing, especially around imaging. When I started out, we were taking hard copy port films and the process to get the patient on the table was so long. Now it takes seconds to take an image and look at it.  The capability of being able to image so quickly and having such good quality imaging where you can see organs and tumors helps us have the ability to treat faster. The patient’s time on the table is a lot less."

Bree, you rock! We sincerely appreciate all you do for cancer patients and for your willingness to share your thoughts with us this week.
